Unpaint by international coatings company Glasst has hit the American market, touting itself as the first-ever peelable architectural wall paint—and it can be applied like any other paint.
Once brushed, rolled, or sprayed onto a wall, Unpaint becomes a solid, film-like layer that can be peeled by hand. Rather than seeping into crevices and texture on drywall like conventional paints, the company says Unpaint sits on top of a surface. Because of this, the peelable paint can be used on walls, furniture, and cabinetry without the need to prep the surface underneath.
It can be ideal for rental projects due to its temporary and durable nature, or the company suggests its used for seasonal colors or special occasions.
"AS WE EXPAND GLOBALLY, OUR GOAL REMAINS TO INTRODUCE INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS LIKE UNPAINT, WHICH EXEMPLIFY OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY AND INNOVATION, TO NEW MARKETS, PARTICULARLY IN THE U.S., WHERE THERE IS A GROWING DEMAND FOR SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIALS," SAID JUAN CAMILO BOTERO, CEO OF GLASST. | PHOTO COURTESY GLASST
How Peelable Paint Works
It’s due to Glasst’s Glasstommer technology, a patented material that has a molecular structure that allows it to cling securely without leaving residue or damaging the surface underneath. The company also uses its Glasstommer technology as a direct replacement for conventional plastics or Ram Board that might be used to protect glass and other surfaces on a jobsite up to one year.
Eco-Friendly Peelable Paint
Glasst also promotes Unpaint as an eco-friendly alternative. The Glasstomer material is sourced from renewable, natural resources, according to Glasst representatives, and makes Unpaint fully biodegradable, breaking down naturally between one to three years. The peelable paint is also is an ultra-low VOC product, and reduces resource waste by removing the need to sand, prime, or repaint walls multiple times.
"RETAILERS ARE EXCITED ABOUT HOW UNPAINT IS UNLOCKING NEW BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES WITHOUT REQUIRING ADDITIONAL INVESTMENT IN THEIR PAINT SECTION," BOTERO NOTED. "FINAL USERS, PARTICULARLY THOSE IN RENTAL PROPERTIES AND DYNAMIC COMMERCIAL SPACES, ARE FINDING UNPAINT TO BE A GAME-CHANGER." | PHOTO COURTESY GLASST
“The peelable film can be reused in some applications, supporting a more circular economy by minimizing waste and promoting sustainability in every step of the product’s life cycle,” wrote Glasst representatives.
Unpaint is available on e-commerce sites like Amazon and Lowes.com for roughly $60 a gallon.
