In Business: Modern Design, Compromise, and Money

Custom builder Zane Williams opens up about what it takes to maintain his architectural vision, from handling clients and staying true to his fluid style, to the importance of transparency and how a slush fund avoids awkward conversations mid-construction

April 27, 2023

In our inaugural episode of In Business, a video series that provides a platform for in depth industry conversations with experts and professionals, we sit down with Zane Williams, president of Z Properties, a custom builder based in Winter Park, Fla.

Williams opens up about his design and building process, how it developed and is still developing along with his style, which remains fluid and flexible, changing as his tastes evolve. He talks reconciling conflicting architectural visions with clients and the importance of transparency throughout, especially in regards to conversations about money. "I don't like to have money conversations during construction," says Williams, whose budgets include a line item for "contingency funds," a slush fund meant for changes that will inevitably happen during a home's building. "They're hard conversations, but easier to have upfront."

The conversation is rich, detailed, and worth listening to.
