Design Details: Mosaic Magic

While the exterior of this Boston townhouse screams its 19th century origins, the interior tells a far different story. Yes, local firm Stern McCafferty Architecture + Interiors retained some of the home’s period charm, but it also added modern details and a number of whimsical touches.
One example of the renovation’s playfulness is on full display in the breakfast room. The informal space features a concealed pantry, small refrigerator, and oak veneer paneling, but its star is a bold custom glass mosaic that draws the visitor’s eye.
“The mural ends up not only being the focal point of the room but a fun way of personalizing the space in a less conventional way, which works with the minimal aesthetics,” says principal Diane McCafferty.
Stern McCafferty collaborated with Artaic, a Boston company that designs and fabricates custom tile-work and mosaics. Taking an image of the homeowners’ daughter swimming while on vacation as the starting point, Artaic produced the mosaic mural using robotic technology and computer programming.
“The minimal design is refreshingly modern, and the abundant sunlight works perfectly with the mosaic backsplash, lighting up the vitreous glass tile to make the swimmer sparkle,” Artaic says.
